7 Measures of Sucess: How Does My Association Rate?

Am I running my association the best possible way? If you are like most association executives, you grapple with that question daily. In fact, this question was the basis for ASAE and the Center for Association Leaderships recently published study 7 Measures of Success: What Remarkable Associations Do that Others Don't. This four year project used the matched pair methodology employed by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in their landmark book, Built to Last. Jim graciously served as a mentor to the Centers project.

 

Comparing 9 remarkable associations to 9 good ones, the measures task force found that, unlike their comparisons in the study, remarkable associations:

  • Nurture a culture that values dialog and engagement
  • Have an intense customer service culture
  • Build and maintain strategic alliances to further their mission
  • Support a data driven decision making process
  • Have a CEO who serves as a broker of ideas

As chair, he is intimately familiar with the findings as well as the data that led to them. Wayne has spent nearly all of his long and distinguished professional career in association management. He recently retired from TAPPI where he served as president for 15 years.
